‘Junts Pel Sí’ won’t make any other offer to CUP

Current Catalan President Artur Mas admitted to being ready to call for elections, but won’t do so until the 11th of January, when the legal deadline expires. However, Mas insisted that cross-party list ‘Junts Pel Sí’ “can’t make any other offer” to radical left CUP since “the presidency of the Catalan Government is not a fish auction”. “Junts Pel Sí has moved on everything which mattered. CUP hasn’t moved on the only thing that wasn’t important: the ‘who’” he stated. “Our mistake was to trust in CUP’s sense of state” he assured and added that CUP “didn’t understand that to turn Catalonia into an independent state it is necessary to add and not to subtract, voting rather than vetoing”. According to Mas, accepting the conditions of those who “put the vetoes and the crosses” would be “the end of the pro-independence process.”

Barcelona (CNA).- ‘Junts Pel Sí’ won’t make any other offer to radical left CUP to allow the constitution of a new government in Catalonia. “It is a matter of dignity. The presidency of the Catalan Government is not a fish auction” stated current Catalan President, Artur Mas, referring to CUP’s demands for cross-party list to present an alternative candidate to Mas. Mas admitted to being ready to call for elections, but won’t do so until the 11th of January, when the legal deadline expires.

“‘Junts Pel Sí’ has moved on what mattered. We have moved a lot” stated Mas “CUP hasn’t moved on the only thing which wasn’t important: the ‘who’”. Therefore, Mas admitted that the cross-party list won’t make any other offer nor propose an alternative candidate, as radical left CUP has repeatedly urged them to do. “It is a matter of dignity. The presidency of the Catalan Government is not a fish auction”, he stated. “Any of the multiple offers that ‘Junts Pel Sí’ has made did nothing to unblock the investiture” admitted Mas “every proposal was responded to with a ‘no’ from CUP”.

Mas noted his dissatisfaction regarding CUP’s veto to his candidature and the progress of the negotiations between the radical lefties and ‘Junts Pel Sí’. “10 MPs can’t impose their will on 62 MPs” he emphasised and nuanced that the 10 MPs from CUP could actually be counted as 5, “as half of CUP admitted to supporting the agreement”.

“CUP doesn’t have a sense of state”

“Our mistake was to trust in CUP’s sense of state” stated Mas. “We believed that, considering the historic moment, CUP would have this sense of state and that the negotiations would lead us to reach an agreement”. According to Mas, after CUP’s Political Board’s meeting on Sunday, it is clear that “what prevails within CUP is the revolutionary spirit”. He consider it to be “fair” to fight for “hyper-revolution” and be “against almost everything” but lamented that as a consequence this didn’t appreciate “how transcendent the moment was”.

Following this, he expressed his opposition to such a revolution and warned CUP that it is impossible to achieve this “with only 10 MPs in the Parliament”. “If CUP had a minimum sense of responsibility they would have realised this”.

“Voting rather than vetoing”

“CUP didn’t understand that to turn Catalonia into an independent state it is necessary to add and not to subtract, voting rather than vetoing”, stated Mas and named this as another mistake committed by CUP and one which was ultimately confirmed this past Sunday. According to Mas, the pro-independence process has to include the middle class. “With only those who want hyper-revolution, we won’t get around the corner” he stated “CUP have committed this mistake, if not, their top member wouldn’t have resigned” he stated, referring to CUP’s top member, Antonio Baños, who quit on Monday after CUP’s final veto to Mas.

“My personal obsession has always been exactly the contrary: to add, to gather together and to get different people to work together” stated Mas and added that “this is the only way to succeed in our purposes”.
