Spain's foreign minister, José Manuel Albares, believes that the peace agreement between Hamas and Israel, due to be formally signed in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, on Monday, marks "a path of hope" for Palestine and the Middle East.

Speaking to reporters in Egypt ahead of the signing ceremony, which will be attended by numerous world leaders including Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, Albares welcomed the accord as "a day of celebration and joy," noting that twenty Israeli hostages had already been released and returned home.

The minister highlighted what he called the "crucial" role played by US President Donald Trump in brokering the deal, alongside the "fundamental" contributions of Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey.

The agreement brings an end to Israel's invasion of Gaza and paves the way for the "massive" delivery of humanitarian aid, Albares said.

"From the very beginning, Spain has been a voice calling for peace – for an end to Israel's military operations in Gaza, for the unconditional release of all hostages, and for the lifting of the blockade that was causing induced famine in Gaza," Albares said.

"Many of these goals have now been achieved. The task ahead is to consolidate them and move forward toward what we have supported from the start: launching and implementing the two-state solution."
