Amnesty granted to independence leader Marta Rovira over referendum case

The Barcelona Provincial Court has granted amnesty to Marta Rovira, former general secretary of Catalan pro-independence politial party Esquerra Republicana.

Rovira was charged with disobedience for her role in organizing the 2017 independence referendum.

Her case initially went to the Supreme Court, but Rovira was never tried or imprisoned because she fled to Switzerland in May 2018.

She returned in July 2024 after all charges against her were dropped except for disobedience, an offense that does not carry a prison sentence.

The case was then transferred to the Barcelona Provincial Court, as she did not hold a position granting special legal immunity, and the amnesty has now been applied to her.
