Sant Joan is almost here, simultaneously one of the biggest and shortest nights of the year in Catalonia, with bonfires, firecrackers, a dessert called coca, and loads of open-air partying and dancing to celebrate the summer solstice.

Known as the 'revetlla de Sant Joan,' the eve of Sant Joan on June 23 is traditionally referred to as "the shortest night of the year," although this is not factually accurate

Fireworks are one of the main ingredients of the night, and beaches will be packed at midnight.

There will be an increased police presence across the country, while fire brigades will be on high alert too for any incidents.

Fireworks: five things to know

But before you light that first firework, here are five things you need to know.

1: Buy safe fireworks.

Only buy approved fireworks from authorised shops, and read the instructions before lighting them.

2: Don’t hold them or throw them.

Never light a firework while holding it, keep it away from your face and body, and never throw one at another person.

3: Keep fireworks away from homes and nature.

Think about where you're using them. Never set fireworks off from balconies or windows, keep them away from anything that could catch fire, and don't set off rockets or other fireworks within 500 metres of wooded areas.

4: Think of others.

The loud bangs and flashes can be overwhelming for some people, including children, older people and those with sensory sensitivities.

5: Look after your pets.

Many dogs and cats are frightened by fireworks, so keep them indoors, close windows, and try to create a quiet space where they can feel safe.

So, Bona Revetlla! Keep safe, and don't forget the coca de Sant Joan.
