The Foundation for the Conservation and Recovery of Marine Animals (CRAM) released five sea turtles on the beach of El Prat de Llobregat, next to the Barcelona airport, on Sunday.

The event was attended by hundreds of families, all keen to see María, Mundelieta, Roa, Silvia and Tomàs return to their home in the Mediterranean.

The release was part of CRAM’s 25th-anniversary celebrations, including a new edition of its 'Back Home' event, also featuring a number of activities for children such as an exhibition tent and crafts related to the conservation of marine life.

The loggerhead turtles were returned to the sea by volunteers from the foundation, as well as a group of lucky children and fishermen part of the 'Fishermen for the Sea' campaign.

The CRAM Foundation was created on April 22, 1996, although its activities date back to 1991, when an epidemic affected hundreds of dolphins in the Mediterranean sea.

During its 25-year history, CRAM has recovered and released more than 800 sea turtles, helped more than 350 live cetaceans stranded on beaches, assisted 70 protected seabirds, and carried out more than 50 scientific projects.

Overall, more than 310,000 people have taken part in the educational activities offered at the Prat de Llobregat Recovery Center and around 1,500 have volunteered for the organization.
