Spanish rail operator Renfe will allow dogs weighing up to 40 kilograms to travel with their owners starting on Tuesday.

World Dog Day (July 21) will mark the first time pets will be allowed on all Renfe trains, including AVE, Alvia, Euromed, Intercity, Avant and Mid-Distance.

Dogs will travel in a designated coach and occupy the window seat.

Owners must carry their dogs on a 1.5-meter non-extendable leash and with a muzzle on, among other requirements.

Dogs will have an additional surcharge of €40 for AVE, Alvia, Intercity and Euromed trains, while Avant and Mid-distance services will require a separate ticket.
