Catalonia will experience a total lunar eclipse this Sunday, popularly known as a 'blood moon' as it will take on an intense reddish colour.

The astronomical phenomenon will begin before sunset, at 7:31 pm, and will reach its apex at 8:11 pm, lasting in the total phase until 8:53 pm, before gradually becoming uncovered again by 10:00 pm.

As the moon rises over the horizon, the best place to see the eclipse in Catalonia will be on the coast, with the coastal areas of Barcelona and Tarragona forecast to have the least cloudiness.

Unlike the solar eclipse, the lunar eclipse can be observed with the naked eye, without any danger and without the need for eye protection.

The total lunar eclipse on September 7 will be visible in much of the world, including in America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Oceania, but will be especially spectacular in certain regions of Asia and Western Australia, according to the National Astronomical Observatory (OAN).

In the Iberian Peninsula, it will be visible almost everywhere with the exception of the westernmost area of Galicia and the Atlantic coast of Portugal.

In Catalonia, all regions will be able to enjoy the total lunar eclipse, although it will depend on cloud cover and the phenomenon will be best seen closer to the coast.

The Castelltallat Astronomical Observatory and the Montsec Astronomical Park have organized activities on Sunday evening to follow the total lunar eclipse.
