The first award of the Catalan "La Grossa" lottery was for lottery ticket number 72,656. The number was sold exclusively in Castellterçol, a village in central Catalonia.

The winner number receives €200,000 per ticket. However, those who had the previous and rear numbers will receive €2,000. And those with the same last four numbers will get €1,000 euros. Otherwise, the same last three figures will get €250 and the last two only €35.

Those who had a ticket number ending in 6, as the awarded, will recover the €10 cost of the ticket.

Other awarded numbers on Friday's lottery were second-prize winner 44,111 and third winner for the 34,226 number.

People in Barcelona and the nearby town of Granollers could be lucky if they bought a ticket of the second awarded number as they will receive €65,000.

The third awarded number was sold in Gironella, in central Catalonia, and online. In this case, the owners of one ticket will get €30,000.

Lottery created in 2014

The Catalan 'La Grossa' lotto, held on New Year's Eve, was created in 2014 by Catalonia's pro-independence government with the aim of using part of the funds to pay for social programs.

According to Catalan Lotteries, 'La Grossa' players have a 25% greater chance of winning a prize than those who play Spain's 'El Gordo', which has over 200 years of history.

However, as the tension over Catalonia’s push for independence has risen in recent years, settling on one of the two lotteries may no longer be a politically neutral decision
