When a baby is born on an airplane, people say they should get free airline tickets for life. But what about a baby who is born in a Barcelona metro station? This is precisely what happened in the Catalan capital on Wednesday morning.

Cristina was on the metro, on her way to Hospital del Mar to give birth, but began to feel unwell and decided to hop off at the Ciutadella-Vila Olímpica station on the L4 yellow line. There she asked for help from Barcelona’s metropolitan public transport (TMB) staff, who prepared a space for her in the station’s offices.

Cristina gave birth to Ángel, a healthy baby boy, at around 10:45, with the help of a medical professional who happened to be in the station at the time as well as of TMB staff while they awaited the arrival of emergency health services (SEM).

According to a Tweet from TMB, both Cristina and Ángel are doing well.

Hospital del Mar answered by welcoming Ángel - and by thanking TMB and SEM too.
