Video game startup industry grows 35% in 2025

Emerging companies in the sector attracted $132 million in funding

Catalonia has seen a 35% increase in video game startups in five years, according to a study led by Catalonia Trade and Investment (or "ACCIÓ" in Catalan).

The study highlights the expansion of the sector and its growing economic impact.

Between 2020 and 2024, the emerging companies in the sector attracted $132 million in funding.

In their 2025 Index report, The Global Startup Ecosystem ranked Barcelona as the city with the 4th-most video game start-ups in the European Union.

Overall, Catalonia is home to 262 companies and studios dedicated to creating video games, employing more than 5,100 professionals.

The report also shows that, over the last 15 years, Catalonia has been the leading region in the EU for attracting projects, foreign investment, and job creation in the video game sector.

In total, it has attracted 24 foreign investment projects, bringing in €158.2 million and creating 1,400 jobs.
