UPC reconstruct musical project Gaudí designed for Sagrada Família bells
'84 Bells' free concert held Thursday June 11 is first showcase of Gaudí’s design

Antoni Gaudí designed a musical element for the Sagrada Família, composed of 84 bells that will be placed in the towers of the Nativity scene in the future.
The plans for these bells were destroyed in the fire in Gaudí's workshop during the Civil War.
The Polytechnic University of Catalunya (UPC) has spent more than 12 years studying the preserved documents and the original designs of the towers to create the sound Gaudí imagined.
According to the study, Gaudí designed a musical system for the exterior of the Sagrada Família, with 84 bells distributed among the 18 towers of the Nativity scene.
The intention was to create a huge carillon with sound that reached every house in Barcelona. The director of the Gaudí Chair at UPC, Galdric Santana, has reconstructed the characteristics of the bells designed by Gaudí.
Santana discovered the parameters of the bell model through his research, and has recreated them. The bells will be installed when the Glòria project is finished, then the bell towers can be filled. This is projected to be between 10-12 years from now.
The bells created by Santana were part of the '84 Bells' performance, a piece performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra at Plaça de Catalunya. It also featured the Palau de la Música Chamber Choir, the Catalan soprano Núria Rial and Galdric Santana, who rang the three Gaudí bells that have been created.
The Chamber Choir performed the fourth movement of Beethoven's Seventh Symphony and the 'Formula 1 Theme Song' by Brian Tyler at the F1 Barcelona Fan Village on June 11.
