Traditional Japanese drum show opens at Barcelona's Teatre Apolo 

Barcelona's historic Teatre Apolo has their opening night for the traditional Japanese drum show on Wednesday. 

The drum company Yamato presents the show 'Hinotori, Las alas del Fénix' from July 22 until August 22 at the iconic theater. 

The show is full of energy that the company explained cannot be described as simply a performance or concert because they create "delicate" music with a great diversity of sound. 

The company explained the performance is the result of "meticulous" work, and the experience is "intense, sad, comforting, and even comical."

The performance features the traditional Japanese taiko drums. Each drum has its own name, and more than 40 feature as part of the performance. 

Yamato's producer and tour manager, Sofía Fillion García, explained that the production is "fun" for the audience because it makes them participate in the show. 

The performance transmits the passion and spirituality of the Japanese tradition through percussion and human connection. 

García shares the most surprising thing about the performance is the "brutal energy" and "physical capacity" of the musicians. "They are enormous drums and require very demanding training," she said.

The group performed in Madrid before taking their work to the Catalan capital as part of the Festival Grec program. 

The Yamato company is known as the 'Drummers of Japan' and have toured in 55 countries, debuting their show in Barcelona on Wednesday at 8 pm.
