Thyssen Museum in Barcelona will open in 2028 focused on modernism and Noucentisme
Paintings from artists such as Ramon Casas, Eliseu Meifrèn, and Santiago Rusiñol to take center stage

The future Carmen Thyssen Museum in Barcelona is expected to open in the last six months of 2028, as announced on Thursday from the La Pedrera building in the Catalan capital.
The site will have a surface of around 9,000 square meters with two underground floors focused on Catalan art from the 19th and 20th centuries, with a special focus on Modernisme art noveau and Noucentisme art.
"The large unknown eras of Catalan culture," as the museum promoters announced during an event with more than 200 industry representatives.
Among the main painters exhibited will be Ramon Casas, Eliseu Meifrèn, and Santiago Rusiñol, as well as a never-before-seen collection from Baroness Carmen Thyssen.
The museum will be located at the Marcet Palace, one of Barcelona's Passeig de Gràcia Boulevard's historic buildings. Before the museum, it used to be home to a cinema, and is located at the corner between Passeig de Gràcia and Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes.
The upper floors will be used for temporary exhibitions and to host a conference hall, with the idea of placing Barcelona as another stop in the large international temporary exhibitions, next to Madrid, Paris, London, or New York.
The cultural offer will be "mainly focused on Catalans."
When the museum was first announced, Baroness Thyssen, one of the world's most renowned art collectors, expressed her "emotion" at the creation of a museum in her "beloved Barcelona" and confirmed that works from her private collection would be on display.
"We want this museum to energize the city by attracting significant artworks to Barcelona and by elevating the international profile of Catalan art," city mayor Jaume Collboni stated.
In late 2024, officials announced that the museum would open in 2027.
