'Sirât' secures 11 Goya Awards nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director

The movies 'Los Domingos,' 'Sirât,' 'Maspalomas,' 'La Cena,' and 'Sorda' lead the rankings in the number of nominations ahead of the next edition of the Goya Awards, as announced by the Spanish Film Academy on Tuesday afternoon.

Alauda Ruiz de Azúa’s 'Los Domingos' tops the list with 13 nominations, followed by the Catalan co-production 'Sirât,' , directed by Óliver Laxe, with 11. 'Maspalomas,' by Aitor Arregi and Jose Mari Goenaga, received nine nominations, while 'La Cena,' by Manuel Gómez Pereira, earned eight, and 'Sorda,' by Eva Libertad, received seven.

The five films are also competing for the Best Picture award.

Among the nominees for Best Director are Alauda Ruiz de Azúa ('Los Domingos'), Arregi and Goenaga ('Maspalomas'), Carla Simón ('Romería'), Óliver Laxe ('Sirât'), and Albert Serra for his documentary 'Tardes de Soledad,' which is also nominated for Best Documentary.

'Sirât' has additionally been nominated for Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Production Supervision, Best Original Score, Best Editing, and Best Art Direction.

'Romería' has also been nominated for Best Supporting Actress, Best New Actor, Best Costume Design, and Best Adapted Screenplay.

In the acting categories, nominees include Ángela Cervantes ('La Furia'), Patricia López Arnaiz ('Los Domingos'), Antonia Zegers ('Los Tortuga'), Nora Navas ('Mi Amiga Eva'), and Susana Abaitua ('Un Fantasma en la Batalla') for Best Actress.

The Best Actor category features Alberto San Juan ('La Cena'), Miguel Garcés ('Los Domingos'), José Ramón Soroiz ('Maspalomas'), Mario Casas ('Molt Lluny'), and Manolo Solo ('Una Quinta Portuguesa').

For the 40th edition of the Goya Awards, 218 Spanish productions were submitted, including 123 fiction films, 87 documentaries, and nine animated films.

A total of 18 European films and 15 Ibero-American productions were also registered, with five titles from each category making the final shortlist.

Among the Best European Film nominees are 'Conclave,' directed by Edward Berger, 'The Girl with the Needle,' by Magnus von Horn, and 'Sentimental Value,' by Joachim Trier.

The awards ceremony will be held on February 28 at Barcelona’s International Convention Center, near Parc del Fòrum.
