Nine movies are vying for the top prize at next year's Gaudí Awards, Catalonia's Oscars, three more than in the last two editions, but five fewer compared to two years ago.

These are Carla Simón's 'Àlcarràs', which won Berlin's Golden Bear in February, 'El fred que crema' by Santi Trullenque, 'El sabater d'Ordis' by David Ruiz Arroyo and Pitu González, 'Escape Room: La pel·lícula' by Héctor Claramunt, 'Jusqu'ici, tot va' directed by Francesc Josep Cuéllar, 'L'últim salt' by Nando Caballero, 'Nosaltres no ens matarem amb pistoles' directed by Maria Ripoll, 'Toscana' by Pau Durà, and 'Suro' a film by Mikel Gurrea.

On this occasion, 19 out of 58 movies have been recorded in Catalan, much more than usual. The average film budgets have also increased slightly, with six movies with over €3 million.

With the announcement by the Catalan Cinema Academy on Thursday, the road to winning next year's Gaudí award starts.

The first voting round will take place until December 2, and the 68 movies will compete to win one of the 25th available statues on January 22 next year.

The 15th Gaudí Award edition will add three new categories: Best Adapted Screenplay, Best New Director, and Best Revelation.
