Liceu to open €47m waterfront venue in Barcelona by 2032

The Gran Teatre del Liceu is the home of opera in Barcelona, one of the city's most iconic buildings, with a history – sometimes cursed – stretching back to 1847.

The latest chapter in its story will unfold not on La Rambla, but by the sea, as the Liceu has announced plans for a new waterfront venue, Liceu Mar, to be built at Port Vell.

The Gran Teatre del Liceu and the Port of Barcelona launched an international architecture competition on Tuesday for the project, which envisions a 9,000 m² building set within a 32,000 m² site, with construction costs estimated at €47.2 million (including VAT).

An additional €28.9 million is budgeted for surrounding urban development.

Plans for the surrounding area include burying nearby roads to create pedestrian zones, public spaces with shade, improved access to the waterfront, and a new square linking the port to the city.

Flexible cultural hub

The new venue – a flexible cultural hub for opera, dance, and education – is expected to open in 2032.

The main objective of Liceu Mar is to create "a space open to all citizens, accessible and inclusive, that becomes a cultural landmark and a driving force for the city."

It will host activities from the Petit Liceu education programme, serve as home to a new International Centre for New Opera Creation, and support diverse programming – from baroque and chamber operas to musicals and contemporary works.

A regular dance season is also planned. The venue will be fully multipurpose, supporting a range of public programming while maintaining a sustainable funding model that includes sponsorships, venue hire, and hospitality services.
