JA Bayona's latest work, 'Society of the Snow', will compete for two Academy Awards this year.

The film, which tells the story of the survival of 16 passengers who were on board Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 after crashing in the Andes mountains, has been nominated for Best International Feature Film and Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

In addition, Catalan production 'Robot Dreams,' by Pablo Berger, has been nominated for Best Animated Feature Film

Set in New York in the 1980s, the filmmaker transports viewers to a story that talks about loneliness, the fragility of relationships and the process of loss.

'Robot Dreams' as well as 'Socety of the Snow' were both presented at international festivals: at Cannes and the Venice Film Festival respectively.

The Oscars will take place at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles on March 10 with Jimmy Kimmel as host.

Bayona: I'm very excited

Speaking to the Catalan News Agency (ACN), Bayona said: "I'm very excited, I was a kid who watched the Oscars every year, and I still do."

"I haven't processed very well that I'm in the Oscars, win or lose, it's a bit difficult to process," Bayona said on Tuesday afternoon in Barcelona, a few hours after the nominees were announced.

"We are very happy for the whole team, for the Spanish film industry for choosing us, and for our friends from Uruguay, Argentina and Chile. It is a very special film with a really great team, and we are all very happy."

The director also highlighted the nomination for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. "They did an amazing job, there were a lot of actors and continuity was really tricky."

"I'm very excited to be part of the party," he added.
