Despite heavy downpours, thousands gathered in the central Catalan town for the opening night of the centuries-old festival

Primavera Sound wasn't the only party in town on Thursday night. In Berga, central Catalonia, revellers were celebrating La Patum, a medieval traditional festival still going strong and recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Just like at Parc del Fòrum, torrential rain made ponchos the fashion item of choice, in this case for the various dancing giants and animals.
