New and classic films will be screened in 53 cinemas across Catalonia as part of ‘Festa del cine’, an initiative that has been making movies accessible for over a decade by offering viewers a varied and affordable catalog. The festival will take place from October 2 to 5, and will include 15 cinemas in Barcelona.

In previous years, film-goers had to sign up ahead of time for discounted tickets via the Festa del Cine website, but this year will different. Movie buffs can head straight to one of the movie theaters on the list and buy as many tickets as they want for €3.50 each. 

The Barcelona cinemas participating in this year's event are Verdi Barcelona, Verdi Park, Cinesa Diagonal, Cinesa Diagonal Mar, Cinesa Som Multiespai Heron City, Mooby Arenas de Barcelona, Mooby Aribau, Mooby Balmes, Mooby Bosque, Mooby Glorias, Mooby Gran Sarrià, Cine Yelmo Westfield La Maquinista, Cine Yelmo Comedia, Renoir Floridablanca, and Cines Girona. 

Navigating a long list of titles can be time-consuming, so Catalan News has created its own movie recommendations for the 2023 Festa del Cine in Barcelona. 

After Everything 

The last movie of the AFTER franchise with an emotional ending full of romance between Hardin and Tessa. Hero Fiennes Tiffin and Josephine Langford play the main characters of the movie that question what happens after a couple has gone through terrible suffering. 

Barbie 

The summer hit directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling is a must-see for those who have yet to experience it in all its pink glory. It may be one of the last opportunities to watch 'Barbie' on the big screen before it is too late.  

The survivor 

Ben Foster plays Harry Haft, a boxer that fought against his partners in Nazi concentration camps and lives with the memories and regret of the past. After the Second World War, Haft tries to compete against boxing legends to see if he can find his first love again. 

Gran Turismo 

Based on the real story of Jann Mardenborough, the movie tells the story of a young man who plays the videogame Gran Turismo. Thanks to his gamer skills, he wins several competitions organized by Nissan to become a professional race driver. 

Jeanne Du Barry 

Jeanne, a young working-class girl, uses her intelligence and beauty to become an aristocrat. She also sees herself as the favorite of King Louis XV, played by Johnny Depp. Maïwenn Le Besco, who takes on the main role of Jeanne, falls in love with the king and moves into Versailles.  

The Nun II 

In 1956, a priest is murdered in France. This sequel to the blockbuster hit 'The Nun' tells the story of Sister Irene, when she faces Valak, the possessed nun. 

Expend4bles 

Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Megan Fox, Tony Jaa, and Iko Uwais play the latest group of mercenaries in a new movie that takes these fighters to Libya. They end up in Qadhafi's old chemical weapons plant where they must stop Rahmat, an old British arms dealer with his own army. 

Rahmat's plan is to steal nuclear weapons detonators for Ocelot; if he succeeds, it could be the end of all humankind. 

A Haunting in Venice 

Agatha Christie's famous detective, Hercule Poirot, returns to the big screen in 'A Haunting in Venice.' After playing Poirot in 'Murder on the Orient Express,' Kenneth Branagh takes the character to post-WWII Italy on the night of Halloween. 

The retired detective, living in self-imposed exile, attends the opening ceremony of a haunted Palazzo. During the event, one of the guests is murdered, and the detective finds himself in a world of shadows and secrets. 

Oppenheimer 

Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, this thriller takes spectators on a 3-hour journey to the story of the men behind the creation of the atomic bomb. Cillian Murphy plays J. Robert Oppenheimer and Emily Blunt plays his spouse, Katherine Oppenheimer.  

The movie also features Matt Damon and Robert Downey Jr.
