David Bowie, Dolly Parton and Jack Johnson headline In-Edit film festival

Flamenco, Latin American sounds and a full day of Nigerian music headline the 24th edition of In-Edit, Barcelona's music documentary film festival.

From October 29 to November 8, In-Edit Barcelona will hold its 24th edition at Mooby Aribau Cinemes, where it will screen 70 documentaries across eight sections.

David Bowie, Jack Johnson, Beastie Boys, Dolly Parton, Beck, Earth, Wind & Fire, and Pulp are just a selection of names from the world of music that will feature in films showing this year. Other titles focus on critic Robert Christgau and photographer Glen E. Friedman.

Of the 70 titles, 64 are world, European, Spanish or Catalan premieres. In addition, nearly 170 guests are coming to speak or present their works, including musicians Fermín Muguruza, Julieta Rada, Clara Aguilar, and director Fernando Trueba.

The festival opens Thursday, October 29, with a tribute to Marianne Faithfull. On Saturday, November 7, 'The Best Summer,' a documentary featuring 1990s icons including the Beastie Boys, Sonic Youth and Bikini Kill, will be the closing film, followed by the awards ceremony.

For those who can't make it in person, the online home of In-Edit will be CaixaForum+, the free streaming platform for arts and sciences. From November 7-22, there will be 15 titles from the program available to stream there, for the first time during the festival's second weekend.

Themes

In-Edit continues to build its showcase of Catalan music-related productions. Albert Serra presents the Catalonia premiere of 'Sixteen Moments of My Life,' a concert documentary about Ingrid Caven, while Carla Simón brings 'Flamenco' to the big screen. 

Other films focus on maestro Jordi Savall, the anthem 'Flying Free,' rapper Baya Baye and the band Remei de Ca la Fresca. 

Flamenco and its influence on contemporary music is another major thread, with artists ranging from La Niña de la Puebla and Enrique Morente to Triana, Perrate, Niño Josele and Califato ¾.

Latin America will feature strongly, with films on Cuba's Pablo Milanés, Uruguay's Rubén Rada, who died in August, and the bachata scene in the Dominican Republic. The festival also dedicates a day to Nigerian music, from 1970s acts Lijadu Sisters, Fela Kuti, King Sunny Adé and I.K. Dairo to current superstar Wizkid.

In-Edit Lab

In-Edit Lab, the festival's talent and professional development program for the Catalan audiovisual sector, will offer more than 10 free activities, including a roundtable on how the industry portrays great female artists, sessions on how artificial intelligence has changed financial management of productions, how post-production shapes documentary storytelling, a masterclass with production company CANADA, and an In-Edit Talent workshop on making music documentary shorts for young people.
