The Barcelona cinema Comedia, located on Passeig de Gràcia, will permanently close on Sunday, January 14, according to owners Yelmo Group.

The five-screen Comedia has been operating as a cinema since 1960 when it opened with just one screen. In 2017, Yelmo bought the complex, but a post-pandemic decline in the number of moviegoers has forced the owners to close it.

The group has five other cinemas in the Barcelona metropolitan area, in Abrera, Barberà del Vallès, Sant Cugat del Vallès, Castelldefels, and Barcelona.

When the operating contract expires on January 14, the owners of the building will look for a new operator who can offer a “long-term” activity with the "greatest added value for the city.”

Comedia's closure is part of a larger tendency all across Catalonia, where more than one hundred cinemas have closed between 2000 and 2020.
