A satirical musical in Barcelona portrays the Spanish royal family

Based on a popular political satirical TV show of the Catalan Public Television Broadcaster, the veteran musical theatre company Dagoll Dagom presents ‘La Família Irreal’ (The Unroyal/Unreal Family). “It is a satire, a parody and a big joke […] about the Royal Family and the system that supports it”, explained Joan Lluís Bozzo, the show’s director. The musical is based on real events, such as elephant-hunting safaris, and it is portrayed by the same actors in the TV show ‘Polònia’. Barcelona (ACN).- The Spanish royal family will be portrayed in a satirical musical to be shown in Barcelona. Based on a popular political satirical TV show of the Catalan Public Television Broadcaster, the veteran musical theatre company Dagoll Dagom presents ‘La Família Irreal’ (The Unroyal/Unreal Family, as in Catalan it is the same word). “It is a satire, a parody and a big joke […] about the royal family and the system that supports it”, explained Joan Lluís Bozzo, the Director of the show and Dagoll Dagom, which has created some of the most popular theatre plays shown in Catalonia in the last three decades. The musical is based on real life events, such as elephant-hunting safaris, shotgun accidents and corruption scandals. It is portrayed by the same actors of the popular TV show ‘Polònia’, and produced by the audiovisual company Minoria Absoluta. In fact, Minoria Absoluta has been in charge of the original idea while Dagoll Dagom composed the musical’s 30 songs. Their idea is to bring the show to as many places as possible, including Madrid.

The Spanish King, the Queen, the Crown Prince, the Princess, the Infantas and their husbands will be on stage in Barcelona, in a satirical musical. “We believe in humour and we believe that everything can be funny”, explained Toni Soler, the Director of ‘Polònia’ and Minoria Absoluta. Soler added that they do not put limits on their creations, as they believe in “an adult humour, directed to a mature audience who likes laughing about important things”.

‘La Família Irreal’ is directed by Joan Lluís Bozzo and Jaume Buixó. It is made up of thirty songs with lyrics such as “We know that the theatre world is not doing well, but for sure not worse than the monarchy”. In the show’s presentation, held on Thursday in Barcelona, all the members of the unroyal family showed up and displayed some of the show’s highlights.

The play was written by Bozzo himself along with Jordi Ventura, Joan Rufas, Pau Escribano and Jaume Buixó. Bozzo explained that the plot is constantly reviewed in order to include the late news about the Spanish royal family. “They are constantly producing material [to work with] and our obligation is to use it”, Bozzo added.
