The French government has recommended its residents not to travel to Spain or Portugal due to the explosion of Covid-19 cases.

The secretary of state for European affairs of the French executive, Clément Beaune, told citizens on France 2 that "those who have not yet booked their holiday, avoid."

Due to the prevalence of predominantly the Delta variant, Beaune said "let's avoid Portugal and Spain" and added that it is "better to stay in France or go to other countries” for holidays.

The government official said they were concerned "in particular" about the situation in Catalonia, "where the French go to party and go on holiday."

He also warned that in the coming days "measures will be strengthened" to prevent travel to countries at risk.
