Mobile now accounts for more than half of the video game industry's global revenue, according to new report

Mobile games have gone from being a relatively small segment to becoming a dominant force in the overall video games market, representing more than half of the global revenue of the video game sector.
Of the total revenue generated by the mobile gaming industry in Spain, Catalonia accounts for the majority.
Barcelona plays a prominent role in the sector nationally, with more than 120 studios based in the Catalan capital, making it one of the main points of innovation and entrepreneurship.
Among other names, Ubisoft, Scopely, Bandai Namco, Digital Legends, Gameloft, and King, all have studios in Barcelona.
A report assessing the economic impact of the mobile video game industry created by the company King, based in Barcelona, estimates that European companies generated €7.53 billion in 2025 from markets around the world, with €722 million made in Spain.
Today, mobile is the main gateway to gaming with more than 300 million players across Europe. Mobile video games, and in particular those with free models, have democratized access to this entertainment medium thanks to the widespread use of smartphones and tablets.
This has meant that video games have reached very diverse audiences with an average player age of around 31 in Europe. Strategy and puzzle games are the genres that have grown the most.
In 2025, the global video game industry generated €167.26 billion, according to the report. Of these, €91.25 billion came from mobile games, more than half of the total and ten times more than in 2012.
In all of Europe, more than 60,000 people work in more than a thousand companies in the mobile gaming sector.
As for Spain, it is among the main mobile game markets by revenue. According to the study, its relevance is related to the culture of ‘start-ups’, specialized support services, support from regional policies, as well as direct foreign investment.
