Tourism drops 4.7% in October compared to last year

Total number of international tourists visiting Catalonia grows by 6.6% and reaches more than 17 million visitors so far this year

The number of international tourists arriving in Catalonia fell by 4.7% in October compared to October last year, according to figures released by the Survey of Tourist Movement on Borders (Frontur). Nevertheless, the total number of tourists that visited Catalonia this year has risen by 6.6%, as the number of international visitors reached 17,236,581 so far this year.

Coinciding with the clash of wills between the Catalan and Spanish governments, the Spanish police charges on the day of the referendum, two general strikes and several mass demonstrations in the streets to demand the release of Catalan officials and leaders of the civil society that are currently in prison, 1,489,870 international tourists visited Catalonia during October this year, while the number of international visitors was 1,562,897 in October last year. Most tourists visiting Catalonia were from France (19.7%), followed by other European countries.
