Summer sales get underway across Catalonia
Businesses optimistic as they say people feel like 'splurging' after pandemic and for return of tourism
The 2023 summer sales campaign officially begins on Saturday.
Businesses are "optimistic" for the season, and traders believe there will be plenty of good deals and prices on offer.
"Retailers want to get rid of stock and the way to do that is through price," admits Laura Garcia, a spokesperson for Comertia trade association. As such, shopkeepers predict that this year's campaign will have "big discounts."
"We will have a good campaign," she added.
Even though the sales officially start today, the July 1 date has been "blurring" in recent years as many big stores bring their discount season forward.
Shopkeepers hope that inflation will not slow spending down, as they believe that after the pandemic people "are eager to splurge."
The public are also celebrating the return of foreign tourism, which normally sees a boost in consumption as people prepare for holidays.
However, small businesses warn that some larger chains inflate the discounts with products brought specifically for the sales.
