The company behind the Fira de Barcelona fair will manage Circuit de Barcelona racetrack for 20 years, starting in 2025.

It will bring new opportunities to Circuit de Catalunya, such as complementing trade shows held in the Catalan capital, taking the circuit to "go beyond" the world of motors, said the director of Fira de Barcelona, Constantí Serrallonga, during a press conference on Wednesday.

"The most important thing we were looking for was that the circuit has the tools and alliances to do this upgrade, this growth in its value to be able to compete on a global level that becomes more and more competitive," said the director of the circuit, Oriol Sagrera.

The changes will not have a significant impact on employees, only those who are currently carrying out the tasks of the new managing company will be replaced, while 20% of employees will stay directly under the circuit.

Step forward in industrialization

One of the challenges will be to "connect the racetrack with public rail transport to Barcelona, and make sure that it can be done on a large scale and in a sustainable way," Jaume Collboni, Barcelona mayor, said.

The circuit should "be a platform for reindustrialization, especially in the mobility sector," the Catalan business and labor minister, Roger Torrent, said.

The contract is the result of the Barcelona-Catalunya Circuit's strategic plan, which was given the green light in October 2022, with the aim of "repositioning the racetrack for the future," Torrent added.

Sports competitions, such as Formula One and MotoGP will continue as usual.
