Exports to US plummet 30% in August due to new tariffs
Across the world, Catalonia saw slight growth in sales abroad in August, worth nearly €6.5 billion

Catalan exports to the United States fell 30.9% in August compared to the same period in 2024.
On August 7, the United States tariffs on the European Union came into force, with a basic rate of 15%, after a political agreement between Donald Trump and the 27 EU member states.
Sales to America were worth €223 million in August.
Imports from the US also saw a significant drop, by 52.4%, down to €240 million worth of goods.
The dynamics were the same across Spain for sales to and from the United States, with a 30.5% drop in exports and 15.2% in imports.
Worldwide
On a global scale, Catalonia's sales abroad also noticed the slowdown in global trade. Overall, exports were up compared to August 2024, but by only 0.2%, to the tune of €6.448 billion.
The chemical sector, as usual, led the way in terms of Catalan exports, with a total of €1.916 billion worth of goods sold to other countries.
However, despite being the top export, its sales were down by 1.2% compared to the same period last year.
In second place was food, beverages and tobacco, with €1.282 billion, 1% more than a year ago; followed by capital goods, with €1.102.1 billion, 6.2% more annually.
Year-to-date data show that Catalan exports are up 1% compared to last year, with sales worth €66.763 billion.
