The American company Cisco has chosen Barcelona as the home of its first microchip design center in the European Union.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced the investment agreement on Thursday after meeting with Chuck Robbins, the CEO of the digital communications conglomerate, at the headquarters of the Spanish government.

The center will be the first of its kind for the company in the EU and will be located in the innovation center that the technology company already has in the Catalan capital.

Pedro Sánchez pointed out that "Spain is becoming a key player in achieving the EU's goal of controlling 20% of the global chip market by 2030," he said in a statement.

In a tweet, Sánchez highlighted that Spain manages to attract "another great project, driven by the recovery plan," and thanked Robbins for backing the "Spanish technological ecosystem."

The Spanish administration also explained that the investment was sealed after Sánchez held previous meetings with the Cisco head in the government headquarters in July 2021 and at the last forum in Davos in May.
