The Anglo-Swedish pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca will invest a further €500 million in the new research and development hub located in Barcelona, which opened last year.

The news was announced Thursday by the company’s president in Spain, Rick R. Suárez, at the center’s first-anniversary celebration.

The new investment is in addition to the €800 million investment already planned until 2027, bringing the total investment by the pharmaceutical company to €1.3 billion.

In addition, AstraZeneca will create up to 2,000 new jobs by 2025, which is twice as many as expected before the opening of the Barcelona office.

According to Suárez, the company hired 500 highly qualified employees from 35 countries last year, 60% of whom are women. “We have big plans to expand our pioneering center,” the president added.
