This Wednesday, the Catalan President, Artur Mas, celebrated the announcement of a rail connection being constructed to the Port of Barcelona, which he says will bring to an end the “historical mistake” of the lack of investment in rail access to the Port. 50% of the funding for the project will come from the Spanish Ministry for Public Works and Transport and the other 50% from the Port itself. “It was a mistake to deny a rail connection from the biggest exporting economy of the Iberian Peninsular with Europe”, said Mas.

Young people are increasingly abandoning Catalonia in order to find employment abroad. During the past four years, the amount of Catalans between the ages of 15 and 34 that are working abroad has increased by 42.46%, according to a study released by the youth trade union Avalot. This figure represents an increase of 35,547 in 2009 to 50,640 in 2013 – a rise of 15,093 people. The National Coordinator of Youth Action of Spain’s largest trade union (Comisiones Obreras – CCOO), Aina Vidal, spoke with the CNA and highlighted how this emigration “is by no means a choice”, and that “these are young, highly qualified graduates that are leaving because they have no future here”.

The number of unemployed people in Catalonia has decreased by 1.8% this August compared to the same month of 2012, with a reduction of 11,224 unemployed. The figures, released by the Spanish Ministry of Employment and Social Security, do however reveal that between July and August the number of unemployed people did in fact increase by 0.2%; although this is said to be because of temporary summer work coming to an end. According to the Catalan Secretary of Employment and Labour Relations, Ramon Bonastre, the 1.8% reduction illustrates that the economy is on the “right tracks”. However, he does admit that it is still an “insufficient” amount.

This weekend, the city of Tàrrega will be transformed as its annual arts festival kicks-off with over 400 performers entertaining crowds. The event, in its 33rd year, will have 24 venues and a total 300 shows. It prides itself on showcasing the best up-and-coming artists as well as placing an emphasis on more unconventional performances. There are numerous shows on offer including theatre, dance and music as well as events for children such as puppet acts and circus performances. The festival attracted 147,000 visitors in 2012 and is located in central Catalonia in the village of Tàrrega.

Hundreds of Catalans living all over the world are showing their support for independence by organising replicates of the large scale Catalan way that is being prepared in Catalonia for the 11th of September. More than 800 people participated in the Catalan way in London, while hundreds held hands on the Great Wall of China in one of the most amazing demonstrations this weekend. In New York, independence supporters did a human chain in Central Park and assembled shortly afterwards in Times Square with Catalan flags.

The European Commission has stated that the “the intentional public condoning, denial or gross trivialisation of the Nazi crimes is to be made criminally punishable”. Answering a complaint by Catalan MEPs about the honours received by a brotherhood of soldiers and supporters of the ‘División Azul’, a division of Spanish volunteers that fought in the Nazi army, Brussels warns that next year it will be able to fine member states that do no prosecute “incitement to violence and hate”.

The 12th edition of the Acústica music festival has broken records with the highest amount of spectators ever. The five day music event, located in the town of Figueres in the north-east region of Girona, saw a total of 80,000 spectators – an increase of 25% on last years edition. The annual festival showcased the best of Catalan music and for its duration the centre of Figueres was transformed into a pedestrainised zone with open air stages in the streets. The most popular concerts were those of the groups Chambao, La Pegatina and the municipal band of Figueres and Delafé y las Flores Azules. The director of the event, Xavier Pascual, stated the attendance figures illustrate the “good health” of Catalan music and culture.

Barça made it three wins on the run to ensure the maximum nine points at the start of the season with a hard fought win in Valencia. Messi’s first half trick, together with another match saving performance from Valdés and the team’s defensive stability in the second half were key to the win. Messi had set up the game with three first half goals, before Valencia pulled two back just before the break and then put the pressure on Barça in the second half, as Martino’s side were forced to show their defensive skills.

On Friday, the Castellers of Vilafranca completed the construction of a human tower containing 10 levels of three members making the highest human tower of all time. The accomplishment took place during the annual festival of Vilafranca and more than 10,000 spectators assembled in Vilafranca square to witness the spectacle. Experts have stated that it may go down as one of the best days in the history of activity as the thirty Castell groups that competed managed to complete numerous successful towers. This was the 30th time that the Castellers of Vilafranca have attempted this feat, with all ending unsuccessfully.

The Catalan Government is drawing out plans to prepare a referendum on independence, especially considering the posibility that the Spanish government may refuse to collaborate with Catalonia in the organisation of the vote. The Catalan Vice President, Joana Ortega, will meet next week with the Unity for Electoral Process to discuss the logistics of the referendum. In an interview on Friday with the Catalan radio, she said the next budget will include a special line for the costs of running the independence vote.

From the 1st of September a new parking payment system will be introduced in Barcelona that allows customers to pay via their mobile devices. The Councillor responsible for Economy, Enterprise and Employment, Sònia Recasens, stated that it illustrates Barcelona’s “commitment to being a Smart City”. According to Recasens, the function of the application, called ApparkB, is to make it more convenient, cheaper and quicker for the public to park their vehicles. The service is completely free, and lets users to pay for the exact time they are parked. It will be available on Android and iPhone devices.

FC Barcelona claimed the Spanish Super Cup this Wednesday after the 0-0 draw against Atletico Madrid in the second leg of the competition at the Camp Nou. Neymar’s goal in the first leg at the Calderón (1-1) was enough for Barça to win the first official title of the season. This is Gerardo Tata Martino’s first title as FC Barcelona’s head manager. Tata Martino admitted that "being a new manager, winning wasn't the same as losing”. “That's why I followed the match intensely", he said. The FC Barcelona manager reiterated that this title belongs to the players and manager who won the Liga last season. “It’s a final that we featured in because of the good work from last season. I’m here because of a tragedy and therefore we’re champions because of the players, Tito and the coaching staff.”

Spanish President, Mariano Rajoy, told the Catalan President, Artur Mas, that he should expect a reply to his request to hold a referendum, after the summer recess. According to the Presidency Minister and Spokesman of the Catalan Government, Francesc Homs, Rajoy informed Mas that he had received his letter during a phone conversation that lasted no more than two minutes. The letter was sent in July in order to express the willingness of the majority of Catalans to carry out a referendum on independence.

The medical director of the Coordinadora de Colles Castelleres de Catalunya (the coordinating committee of the human towers of Catalonia – CCCC), Daniel Castillo, has announced that the tradition is just as dangerous as practicing any other sport. Two weeks ago, a casteller (Castell participant) was seriously injured in Barcelona during the construction of a Castell. However, in an interview with the CNA, Castillo highlighted how that historical tradition is, in fact, becoming safer with only 2.5% of the 6,500 Castells of 2013 collapsing. “During the 1990s about 7% of Castells collapsed”, he noted. Castells is a tradition unique to Catalonia and in 2010 was declared a UNESCO element of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The Catalan Presidency Minister and Government Spokesman, Francesc Homs, said in a press conference on Tuesday that the draft of the bill develops the powers granted by the 2006 Statue of Autonomy, while complying with Spanish law and constitutional framework. He added that it is an instrument to strengthen the external activities of the government of a country “that aims to become free” and is the first bill of the government focused on its foreign relations. Homs also said he is confident that, sooner or later, the European Commission will publish its opinion about the legal consequences of independence in Catalonia and Scotland.
