UN Gaza ceasefire resolution 'firm step' towards peace, says Catalan foreign minister
Meritxell Serret calls for a Palestinian state as part of a two-state solution
Catalan Foreign Minister Meritxell Serret said she was optimistic that the UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza would be a "firm step" towards peace in Palestine.
The resolution, proposed by Algeria, was adopted on Monday with 14 votes in favor and one abstention from the United States.
More than 32,000 people have died in Gaza as a result of the Israeli military offensive since the outbreak of the conflict.
In an interview with the Catalan News Agency (ACN), Serret welcomed the UN stance as "very good news" and stressed that the Catalan government had been calling for a ceasefire "from the very beginning."
Serret emphasized the imperative of a ceasefire to halt the "unjust aggression against the victims" and expedite the delivery of humanitarian aid.
The foreign minister hopes that Israel will "comply" with the ceasefire and that it will take effect "as soon as possible".
Serret believes that peace in Gaza will be achieved when the Palestinian state is recognized as part of the two-state solution.
