Catalan movie director J.A. Bayona has been announced as a member of the 77th Cannes film festival jury.

The film festival, held in France, is one of the biggest film festivals in the world.

The jury has to decide which out of 22 movies will win the grand Palma d'Or prize. Last year Justine Triet's French drama 'Anatomy of a Fall' won the prize.

Greta Gerwig, director of Barbie, Little Women and Lady Bird, will be the president of the jury this year.

Joining them will be screenwriter Ebru Ceylan, actors Lily Gladstone, Eva Green, Pierfrancesco Favino and Omar Sy and directors Kore-Eda Hirokazu and Nadine Labaki.

Society of the Snow

J.A. Bayona received a lot of praise with his 2023 movie 'Society of the Snow', which is currently the second most watched non-English film on Netflix.

'Society of the Snow' tells the story of what has been referred to as the 'Miracle of the Andes,' where over a dozen passengers of the Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 survived for 72 days in the Valle de las Lágrimas valley between Chile and Argentina in 1972.

16 out of the 45 passengers on the plane made it back home.

The movie was nominated for two Oscars, Best Makeup and Hairstyling and Best International Feature, losing out on both.
