Breakup of the Catalan independence movement – how did we get here?

The fight for independence in Catalonia has made headlines all over the world over the past decade. But now, the movement that has enjoyed so much success and cohesion over the past decade seems to be at an impasse. After ten years of collaboration, working together through the referendum vote in 2017 and for years afterward, the two main pro-independence parties are now no longer united by their shared goal of splitting from Spain. But how did we get here?
