Barcelona’s oldest painted coat of arms

The restoration of 14th-century Gothic paintings has revealed the city’s oldest painted coat of arms. A team of six restorers has been working since June to recover a 14m2 painting located in the city hall’s entrance courtyard. The roof still has its original beams and could date as far back as 1371. There are two coats of arms: one for Barcelona with the Sant Jordi cross, and another with four stripes, the symbol of the Aragon crown. The paintings were found in 2008 during routine cleaning works.
/ ACN
