Andreas Kron was the winner of Stage 2 of La Vuelta which finished on Barcelona's Montjuïc hill.

The Dane made an attack with 4 km to go that nobody could keep up with, and added the iconic Montjuïc stage win to his past Volta a Catalunya stage victory.

The victory for the Lotto-Dstny rider will no doubt be an emotional one, following the death of his teammate Tijl de Decker in a training accident earlier in the week.

It was a chaotic race day marked by very wet conditions and thumbtacks placed on the road on the descent of the Coll d'Estenalles mountain.

The thumbtacks caused more than a dozen punctures, including to the bike of defending champion Remco Evenepoel and Welsh rider Geraint Thomas.

The events happened around 3.30 pm when the riders were descending from the Coll d'Estenalles mountain towards Talamanca and Navarcles.

Cyclists who had punctures were able to return to the peloton without complications, however.

Early in the day, race organizers made a change to the finish of the stage, with the times for the general classification being taken before the ascent up Monjuïc, 9 km from the finish line. Bonuses, however, were kept up for grabs for that last stretch.

This decision was made because of the adverse weather conditions making the Montjuïc loop additionally dangerous to cycle on.

The treacherous conditions made it tough for the riders all day, with numerous falls throughout the course.

The rain also forced the cancellation of fan activities that were organized to be held on Passeig Lluís Companys which had been launched on Saturday.
