A supporter of FC Barcelona basketball team slept in prison on Friday night for waving the Catalan independence flag when attending a match of the Spain’s King’s Cup between his team and Baskonia. The competition is being held until Sunday in Las Palmas, in the Canary Islands.

Joan Ubach, the mayor of Tremp, the fan’s hometown, denounced these events to the Catalan News Agency that the man showed the ‘estelada’ flag after Barça’s win. “After this, some Spanish police officers started their ‘work’ insulting him, asking for his papers and tickets,” said Ubach. When the Barça supporter asked them for the reasons why he was being asked his papers, the officers arrested him and took him to a police station, where he spent the night.

Ubach also explained that the individual arrested was freed on Saturday evening. In a tweet in the wee hours of Saturday, the mayor of Tremp also claimed that the individual was not only arrested, but “beaten.”
