The recently created Zeroport platform, which is made up of different social and environmental groups, has called for the immediate halt of plans regarding the expansion of both Barcelona's port and airport.

On Thursday, platform members also asserted the need to reduce the number of flights and cruises to and from the Catalan capital due to pollution, describing them as "the cornerstone of an unsustainable economic and tourism model that infringes upon basic vital needs that have a strong social impact."

Besides environmental concerns, Zeroport directly links the elevated number of flights and cruises to the increase in housing prices, overcrowding of public space, precarious jobs, and the disappearance of local businesses in Barcelona.

The platform argues that flight and cruise reduction plans should be defined, particularly for shorter trips with less polluting alternative means of transport.
