Jordi Turull, the Catalan presidency minister at the time of the 2017 independence referendum who spent over 3 years behind bars, has embarked on a "freedom walk" across Catalonia with the aim of expressing his "gratitude and commitment to the country."

The politician, who will make his way from Portbou, near the French border, all the way to Arnes, a small town in southern Catalonia, set off on Saturday morning accompanied by 200 people.

Turull said he was "surprised" to see so many people with him. "To walk is an effort and a way of continuing forward, he said.

The former minister expects to complete the journey in two weeks. His first stop will be Port de la Selva, on the Costa Brava.
