A woman, a three-year-old boy and a baby of months have died in a fire in Hospitalet de Llobregat, just outside Barcelona city center.

The Medical Emergency System made efforts to resuscitate the youngest child, who was left in critical condition for some time before finally passing away. The others died by inhalation of smoke.

Fire fighters received notice at 6:40 a.m. and sent seven units to the site. They got to the apartment eight minutes afterwards, and extinguished the fire in 35 minutes, but were unable to save the lives of the three people.

The professionals rescued a woman who tried to escape the fire through her window –they aided her as she was hanging from a corbel on the exterior of the building.

Some local sources told the Catalan News Agency that the fire might have started after an electric overload. The Catalan police will lead the investigation on the events once the firefighters end their work.

The apartment was not occupied, unlike the fatal fire in Badalona, also close to the Catalan capital, which killed three people in early January.
