The Catalan government announced it was willing to take in at least 120 refugees after a fire broke out last week on the Greek island of Lesbos leaving around 13,000 migrants without shelter.

The Foreign Affairs as well as Labor, Social Affairs, and Families departments have called on the European to respond to the crisis resulting from the fire at the Moria refugee camp in an "urgent, charitable, humanitarian, joint and shared" manner.

These departments have also asked the Spanish government to grant Catalonia greater authority over the reception refugees as well as to modify Spain's immigration law to counter what they describe as limitations in terms of the concession of work and residency permits.

"Catalonia wants to be an active part of this humanitarian response," said foreign affairs minister Bernat Solé, adding that "European countries failed to fulfill their 2015 commitment to take in 160,000 refugees."
