The number of people receiving social aid from the Catholic charity Caritas in Barcelona went up to 19,380 this year, about twice as much as 2019.

Economic support to buy food tripled to surpass one million euros, and financial help to pay for housing doubled to 1.8 million euros, according to the organization’s annual Christmas report.

"The Covid-19 crisis has done nothing but worsen the problems and needs we could already see in 2019," said the director of Cáritas Diocesana Barcelona, Salvador Busquets, in a press conference on Wednesday.
