There were 20 fatalities on Barcelona's roads in 2023, three fewer than the previous year. Almost half of those killed – nine in total – were motorcycle and moped drivers.

Overall, the number of traffic accidents fell almost 5% compared to 2022, with local police – the Guàrdia Urbana – attending a total of 6,857 traffic accidents that led to injuries.

Serious injuries, on the other hand, increased by 30%, which can be partially explained by a change in the police's accident reporting methods.

There was a three-fold increase in the number of cyclists seriously injured (26), and the number of electric scooter users seriously injured doubled (11).

The overwhelming majority – 92% – of people seriously injured were vulnerable road users: motorcycle drivers and passengers, cyclists, electric scooter users and pedestrians.

In light of the figures, the city council has urged opposition councilors to agree to make helmets on electric scooters compulsory.
