Unemployment increases by 16,703 people in August after having decreased for 4 months in a row

August ended with 555,894 unemployed people registered within the Catalan Public Employment Service (SOC). 4 months in a row of continuous decreases has come to an end. This figure means 16,703 more unemployed people, 3.10% more than those who registered in July.

Madrid (ACN).- The Spanish Ministry of Employment has released the employment data for August. In relation with last year, unemployment has increased by 36,765 people in Catalonia, which means 7.08% more than the people registered in August 2009. For the whole of Spain, the number of unemployed people also increased in August. 61,083 more people are jobless than in July in Spain, 1.56% more. However, Catalonia is undergoing a 3.10% increase in unemployment in August


The most hit sector in Catalonia has been services, with 11,048 people, followed by construction, with 3,430. The industrial sector has put 2,504 people on the unemployment list. Only the agriculture sector has experiences decreased unemployment due to the seasonal harvesting. Regarding Catalan territories, Lleida has had the smallest increase, as agriculture employs many people there. However, results have been negative across Catalonia.
