On May 10, a new candidate for Catalan president was announced: Quim Torra. In order to officially nominate the independent MP to lead the Catalan government, shortly after, Catalan Parliament speaker Roger Torrent announced a new round of talks with parliamentary group presidents to be held on Friday, May 11.

This is not the first time that Torrent has met with MPs to discuss the politician nominated to lead the government - a nomination which, once official, would then have the candidate be debated on and voted for or against by the various party members in a swearing-in plenary.

The parliament speaker already officially nominated other candidates, including Jordi Sànchez, Jordi Turull, and the deposed president Carles Puigdemont himself, who, as the leader of Torra’s Junts per Catalunya (JxCat) candidacy, announced his successor’s nomination via video.
