The Spanish government has responded to the independence trial protest in Madrid this Saturday with an official statement. “The democracy that protects those who are demonstrating today is the very same that judges those who violate laws”, reads the text.

After thousands of people denounced the ongoing Catalan trial against 12 independence leaders, Pedro Sánchez’s executive reiterated that “everything” can be discussed within the realm of the Constitution, but nothing outside it.

“The government has always had a sincere wish to resolve the problem in Catalonia”, it states.

Reaction of SCC

The unionist Societat Civil Catalana (SCC) claimed that Madrid is an “open-minded city” and welcomed the rally. Its president, Josep Ramon Bosch, hoped that those looking for Catalan independence had seen that it is “a city where no one ever asks your origin, not like” in Catalonia “where many times it is asked”.
