The Catalan president, Quim Torra, will denounce "the seriousness of the political situation in Catalonia, with political prisoners and exiles, around the world."

This is what he told the press on Sunday evening from San Francisco, at the start of his official visit to the US, and ahead of his talk at Stanford University.

Torra also said he would highlight the inability of Catalans to exercise their "right to self-determination."

According to the president, while on his US trip, and in the run-up to the trial against pro-independence leaders, he will have a chance to explain "what worries Catalans."

During his remarks to the press, Torra also said he had met with Dave Bieter, the mayor of Idaho's capital, Boise, who expressed support for the jailed leaders and Catalonia's right to self-determination.

According to Torra, Bieter told him that it is "incomprehensible that one could end up in prison for launching a referendum."
