The mayor of New York City, Bill de Blasio, has signed a letter in support of the BComú party candidate, Ada Colau, who is seeking reelection as mayor of Barcelona in the local elections on May 26.

Widely reported on Friday in the Catalan media and confirmed by the party, De Blasio praised Colau's management of the Catalan capital, where she has been mayor since 2015.

The letter backs Colau's handling of the major challenges facing large cities, such as property speculation, and praises her feminism and welcoming approach to refugees.

Colau tweeted her thanks to De Blasio for his support in these elections in which "so much is at stake," while BComú says it will publish the letter in the next few days.
