Cristina Cifuentes has resigned as president of the regional government in Madrid.  A major figure in Spain’s ruling People’s Party (PP), she stepped down amid shoplifting allegations, and after being under fire for weeks, accused of faking her master’s degree.

Cifuentes announced her resignation on Wednesday morning, shortly after a Spanish newspaper published a video in which she is seen handing items to a supermarket security guard. She allegedly stole two pots of anti-ageing cream.
