The head of the Spanish executive Pedro Sánchez has stated that there has been "a lack of empathy" regarding Catalan politics and the political debate between Catalonia and Spain, which has been dominated by "strong, confrontational language."

Sánchez also highlighted the need for "dialogue" to create a "framework of coexistence" in order to reach "peaceful solution."

Speaking in Quebec beside the Canadian president Justin Trudeau, Sánchez also said that the "independence movement does not represent a social majority," but rather "a parliamentary one."

Regarding finding a solution to the political conflict he said it will be done "within the law and with dialogue."

Trudeau himself made no remarks on the situation, saying it was an "internal affair" between Spain and Catalonia.
